OF

THE EUNUCH ADMIRAL

A powerful work about castration and politics, Descendants was written by Singapore theatre doyen Kuo Pao Kun in 1995.

It recounts the legacy of the man responsible for China's most extensive maritime expeditions in the 15th century, the legendary eunuch, Admiral Zheng He.

The text is considered a landmark in Singapore Theatre history.

And this production was my embarkation to discovering theatre making.

The synthesis of a text I had studied deeply and detailedly as a student, with a director who empowered me as a collaborator, resulted in a genesis that raised me from being a worker in a production, to begin thinking as a maker of theatrical meaning.

The accidental role of Props Master bore from the freedom I was allowed to explore and offer, and my autonomy and invention in searching and crafting, resulting in a props design that embodied my part of the overall vision, and eventually being credited for.

This was a pivotal step in my education and quest toward an aesthetic that resonates with me.

I believe that every new play I evolve with in the future, will trace its descendancy from this show.
